The Show - you will see me sweating and exhausted taking photos at the venue for the first days.
After the first 2 days:
Basically for food - I will study tripadvisor for best sushi, best eel, and best ramen places in Japan.
Toys - I will be hunting for old made in japan toys / figures / models / die casts.
photobooks - tons of prons and AV... I mean art books and references Bluray/ DVD's for my photography jobs. ahem...

I am also staying at Centurion Hotel Ueno. going on the 17th leaving on the 24th.

Yeah dtrain! My arrival time is 1440 on the 17 September. I will also take the train to Tokyo Station and transfer to Ueno.
I believe there is a direct train to Ueno from Narita Airport? more studies are needed.
In regards to messaging, would it be okay to use whatsapp or facebook messenger? My facebook:
www.facebook.com/wilbur.lee
I will be getting a wifi egg thingy either in Japan or in Hong Kong before I take off.

Oh and I depart Tokyo on 24 September 1655.
I am wondering how much cash I need to bring, I hope the shops in Tokyo start taking credit cards. I hate carrying cash to trips.

Re: JAPAN VENTURE - WITH SMILES ON OUR LIPS
My arrival is 1655 on the 17th. I was planning on buying a Suica Card at Narita and loading up money on it, then taking the Narita Express to Tokyo Station, then JR Yamanote Line North to Ueno. If there's an easier way let me know if you find it!
I don't know what I'm going to do for wifi / data yet. I have an iPhone and can use 1GB of LTE data on my international plan when in Japan, not sure if that's enough. No idea how the data is in Japan. Do I need a pocket wifi? Man, I still have so many questions and need to do more research. I don't do Facebook, so maybe texting through whatsapp is best?

Re: JAPAN VENTURE - WITH SMILES ON OUR LIPS
Definitely snag a pocket wifi. They cost between $35 - $50 to rent for 7 days or how long your stay is. Pick it up at the airport and drop it off at the airport before you depart. You can also preorder one and have it sent to your hotel or pick it up at the airport. http://japan-wireless.com/products.html
From what I've read most places don't have free wifi and if they do, it's not easy to log in if you're a foreigner. Sideglide can confirm.
Bring cash, don't expect places to take cards, but anyplace that does I'll certainly be using the card over cash.
I've been reading a lot mostly from this site http://www.japan-guide.com/
Sideglide - what's the best way to get from Narita to Ueno? Also what sort of pass did you recommend people buy ahead of time for the subway/trains or does that mostly depend on where you plan on going/how far?

Great ideas. I am also trying to figure out how to get to Ueno station from Narita Airport.
I will definitely get a Suica card thing, and pocket wifi I will check the local HK shops for the week rental (cheaper than getting one in Japan I am sure).

Hi gang,
First off, CASH CASH CASH. I know Mandarake takes cards but most places say sorry. Or they take only Japanese cards like JACCS and stuff. Major department stores take cards. Most restaurants (besides hotels and fancy places) don't ever take cards.
You can get by with about 2000 yen a day if you are not shopping. I would say 3000 without a day to be sure with travel.
Best way from Narita to Ueno is to take the Keisei Skyliner. Check info here:
http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/skyliner/us/
And yes, buy a suica train card. They will charge 2000 yen. 1500 is added as a fare charge and 500 is to cover the cost of the card. If you dont want the card after you are done, you can return it to a JR station and get the 500 back. I think it is a nice keepsake personally. You can use it on trains, subway, buses, etc. But NOT on a taxi. The good news is, you can use it throughout Japan as well. IN the past, you would need a card for Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, etc.... Now they are all unified. You can also use them in convenience stores so it makes it easy to pay if you are not familiar with money lingo.
Don't even think about leaving the airport without that wifi pack. Seriously. You can get around the trains OK in Tokyo because there is Japanese and English used. BUT, on foot, on the street, it is a vastly different story. Fun fact, many old cities were built around a castle or high ranking officials home. To protect against attackers, they would purposely build the streets to be confusing (think like a maze) so they could catch a baddie trying to flee. That is how it is in most areas. lots of streets that have curves and plots of land that are wedges.
Also, it is nice to be able to research what to say if you are asking shop staff, etc.
Trains in Tokyo run pretty late, just after midnight and a bit beyond depending on the train line.
Anyway, I am always here to help. I don't use Whatsapp but I do use the app, "Line". Pretty much everyone here uses that exclusively. PM me if you want to exchange info.
Really looking forward to see you guys, Just over a month away!

Hope this helps.

I just tried using the web link for the Skyline from Airport Terminal 2 to Ueno, after the first page of entering my itinerary it says:
Error:
The date entered is not within the period available. ([Message code: MEC-0037])
Sounds like no train service on that day? 17th September.
Re: JAPAN VENTURE - WITH SMILES ON OUR LIPS
There is, many.
http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/skyliner/us/sp/skyliner/timetable.php
As per the instructions, tickets go on sale 1 month prior to the travel date. So tickets for September 17 will go on sale after August 17th. So try again in a few days
