Total Beginner - Basic Custom / Reassembly Questions

Post by Rusty Toxic on Sat Jan 13, 2018 8:19 am

So, just discovering 3A and have my first piece. Interested in buying parts and reassembling to create a custom figure, but I’m not sure if there’s anything I need to know. Biggest question I have is how easy is it to pop the parts together. Also, if anyone has suggestions or things I need to be aware of, please let me know. Thank you!

3A has made different bodies over the years.  In terms of the 1/6 scale male bodies the biggest issue that you probably have to look out for is the ankle pegs.  The earlier bodies were compatible with your standard Hot toys true type body.  The current bodies that 3A makes however have a thicker ankle cup probably to prevent breakage so the ankle peg I believe is slightly smaller so may need some modding with some sort of epoxy putty if you're going to be using feet from those earlier bodies or similar ones.  Unless you can make your own pegs.

3A also has made slim and muscular male bodies.  The slimmer bodies have a narrower neck insertion area between the shoulders which can be an slight issue when articulating the arms at the shoulder; the arms can pop the head off when articulating or be obstructed for movement by the neck.

Heat is your friend when removing or popping on vinyl parts like hands.  Just heat the vinyl hands with a blow dryer to slightly soften them and make it easier to pop on and off.

These are toys made out of plastic so they can break.  Most breakages that occur are at the wrist pegs in the male figures and the wrist and ankle pegs on the female figures.  Again, when switching out hands particularly heat the vinyl hand not the wrist pegs.

That's all I can think of for now, but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I'm sure I or someone else will be happy to help out.

Outstanding - exactly the type of advice I was looking for. Guess my only question now is how to figure out if hands / feet / head will fit a body type I’m considering purchasing off eBay. Hoping I can put together a cool figure for quite a bit less than retail / eBay Pricing. Thank you!!!

Not every 1/6 body type is equal to another especially if the 1/6 body is from a different manufacturer. There is no standard from body to body. Some companies make the neck, wrist and foot pegs to fit other bodies based of the HotToys True Type body but there are slight differences with how wide or narrow those parts attach in some cases, I say it's about a 95% chance that it will work with no hiccups. Expect to some modding if it doesn't and do your research. Onesixthwarriors forum is a good place to start, you'll find some helpful intel there and don't be afraid to ask questions.
